About
OUR VISION To harness the magic of movies and use it for actual, tangible improvements in the lives of people.
OUR MISSION To create a new kind of special effect from feature films, establishing a virtuous cycle of financing films and funding 501(c)(3) organizations.
OUR PURPOSE To use feature films to raise awareness of social, cultural, educational and environmental issues and provide funding to address them.
WHO WE SERVE The population served will vary with each project. Our first project focuses on addiction, single-parent families, and the use of poetry for social change.
THE PROBLEM WE ARE SOLVING We are closing the gap between the power of film to create awareness of issues threatening our world, and the act of solving those issues.
WHAT WE OFFER An exceptionally cost-effective platform for raising awareness of, and working to solve, pressing issues threatening our world.
HOW THE COMMUNITY BENEFITS By creating widespread awareness and empathy among broad groups of people for important issues and providing funding for solutions to them.

How We Work
Special Effects Foundation creates a new kind of special effect in feature films – we harness the magic of movies and convert it into actual, tangible improvements in the lives of people.
We are a non-profit organization that uses the power of film to create awareness of issues threatening our world, and we then act to help solve those issues. There are two steps in our process.
First, we make Program Related Investments in feature films that explore important social, cultural, educational and environmental issues while maintaining a premium on entertainment value.
Second, we contribute 100% of all financial returns we realize from the film to other existing 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that are working to address the issues explored.

For Example
Special Effects Foundation will make a Program Related Investment in a feature film that explores substance abuse and the challenges of being a single parent, with its entertainment value amplified by a screenplay written entirely in rhyming couplets.
The film is produced, sold and generates a financial return.
100% of the financial return realized by Special Effects Foundation is then donated to 501(c)(3) organizations that focus on these issues.
Such organizations could include those that:
1. Work to prevent substance abuse and support families who are impacted as a result of it. For example: Shatterproof
2. Assist single-parents navigate the challenges of balancing work, child rearing and the pursuit of survival. For example: The Single Parent Project
3. Support the teaching and appreciation of poetry. For example: Split This Rock

Film Finance
Films are typically financed with several different sleeves of capital. These include:
- Equity investments
- State tax credits
- Pre-sold distribution rights
- Loans against tax credits and pre-sold distribution rights
- In-kind goods and services
Special Effects Foundation participates in the first of these sleeves, alongside other equity investors. All equity investors are treated equally.
In an independent film with a $4 million budget, a likely breakdown of the financing sleeves would be:
- $3M equity
- $700K state tax credits
- $0 pre-sold distribution rights
- $700K loan against tax credits
- $300K in-kind goods and services
In this example, if Special Effects Foundation made a PRI of $1M it would be alongside other equity investors contributing $2M, all with the same terms. If we assume a 1.2x return, then Special Effects Foundation would receive $1.2M which it would then contribute in its entirety to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations addressing the issues explored in the film.
